How Early Should You Leave Redditch for Birmingham Airport?

Birmingham Airport (BHX) is the closest major airport to Redditch, and it’s the trip we make more than any other. It’s close enough that people often leave it too late, especially for early-morning flights, so here’s how to time it.

Rather not worry about timing? Book our Redditch to Birmingham Airport taxi and we will plan the pickup time with you.

How long does it take from Redditch to Birmingham Airport?

Birmingham Airport is about 18 miles from Redditch. The quickest route is usually up to the M42 and along to Junction 6 for the airport. In normal traffic the journey takes around 25 to 35 minutes. The M42 can be slow at rush hour, so for a weekday morning between 7 and 9am we allow extra time.

When should I arrive at the airport?

Your airline gives the official advice, but as a guide:

  • Short-haul and European flights: aim to arrive about 2 hours before departure.
  • Long-haul flights: aim to arrive about 3 hours before departure.
  • Peak times (school holidays and the first flights of the morning): add a little more, as security can be busy.

So for a 9am holiday flight to Spain, you'd want to be at BHX by about 7am, which means a pickup from Redditch at around 6:15 to 6:20am.

Early-morning flights from BHX

Many summer holiday flights leave Birmingham between 6 and 7am, and the terminal gets busy from about 4am. For a 6am departure you'd want to arrive by about 4am, so a pickup from Redditch at around 3:15am. Roads are quiet at that time, but it's worth building in a small buffer. We run 24 hours a day, so a 3am pickup is no problem.

Drop-off and pick-up at Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport has a dedicated drop-off area close to the terminal, and the airport charges a fee to use it. On the way back, we track your flight and meet you outside the terminal once you've collected your bags, so there's no need to find a car park or wait around.

Tips for a smooth BHX trip

  • Check in online and download your boarding pass before you leave.
  • Check the current hand luggage and liquids rules with your airline.
  • If you're travelling with a group or lots of luggage, ask for our 8-seat Mercedes Vito.
  • Tell us your return flight number so we can track it.
